From 20th Century Masters to Contemporary Artists
Heritage Graphics has a 22-year history of licensing photographic imagery that reflects the social and political movements of our time. Photographers have always raised public awareness through the storytelling power of their work — many 20th and 21st century photographers consciously documented social conditions and advocated for racial justice.
HGI showcases images of the dignity, pride, success, and beauty of Black American life. We hope to offer images of a complex and diverse community portrayed in the 20th century by Black American masters like James VanDerZee, Gordon Parks, Roy DeCarava, Carrie Mae Weems, and Dawoud Bey. But there are also many lesser known men and women photographers who are working today, maintaining studios, concentrating on urban realism, and using technology in new ways.
Reflecting on history helps us to understand the present, and so, we hope the images we license will inspire conversations about history and its relevance to the present day. Cameras document the dignity and accomplishments of all people — and photographs become witness to history.
